I’d heard somewhere that “living with someone who has depression can make you depressed too,” but when I started living with someone I love, I was so happy that those words faded into the back of my mind.
We’re in our first year of living together now. Before we moved in, I was convinced I’d “definitely help him overcome his depression.” We get along so well, and I naively thought, “If we’re happy living together, there’s no way his depression won’t get better.”
But reality wasn’t that simple.
Once we started living together, I realized his depression stems largely from insomnia. But insomnia isn’t something that just goes away easily.
He works a regular job, but because of his insomnia, he often gets only about two hours of sleep before heading to work. As a result, he spends most of his days off just sleeping.
It wasn’t until we started living together that I truly understood how tough it is to deal with depression.
Still, I’m committed to supporting him and facing his illness together moving forward.
