My Mother’s Depression and Her Treatment with Imipramine

About ten years ago, my mother, who lives back home, was diagnosed with depression.

The trigger seemed to be a workplace issue at the part-time job she’d held for years. She received an anonymous letter that, while not directly naming her, clearly targeted her, saying, “Long-time employees should quit to improve the workplace environment.”

Looking back, it also coincided with menopause, which might have played a role.

She quit her job and stayed home, using her illness as a reason to avoid housework or going out.

Worried about her, I urged her to see a doctor, but she was resistant to visiting a psychiatrist or mental health clinic.

Some time passed, and she must have wanted to do something about it herself because she went to an internal medicine doctor on her own.

The doctor prescribed imipramine.

Like me, my mother isn’t one to take medication for minor ailments, so she must have been really desperate.

Due to her mindset, she stopped taking the medication after about two months, and from there, her condition gradually improved.

Now, she’s fully recovered, enjoying trips with my father and embracing a second chapter in life.
