Always Encouraging with “We’re Right Here for You”

When a family member gets depression, it’s easy to think, “I don’t want to accept this” or “They’ll get better soon.” But facing it head-on and getting to a hospital early is the best way to improve symptoms. Treatment doesn’t always work right away, so it’s important to support them patiently over time.

When my younger sister got depression, we took her to the hospital right away, and she got meds. But she didn’t improve quickly. She felt discouraged, worrying, “I might be like this forever,” which made her anxiety worse.

That made the family anxious and sad too, but instead of sinking with her, we kept saying, “We’re all right here for you, so take your time getting better.”

That seemed to reassure her, and little by little, she started regaining her energy.
