I lived in New York for a long time, but after returning to Japan, I couldn’t adjust to life here and developed depression. At my worst, I was consumed by dark thoughts every day. I couldn’t sleep at night, hated meeting people, and couldn’t even enjoy music.
I was irritable but didn’t understand why, so I went to a psychiatrist. They prescribed sleeping pills to help me rest. But the meds lost their effect quickly, and I kept needing more.
I visited the psychiatrist monthly for prescriptions, but my depression didn’t improve. Eventually, the doctor suggested I see a specialist at a university hospital’s psychiatric department. They wrote me a referral, and I went.
At the university hospital, they prescribed antidepressants. Over time, with adjustments to the meds, I slowly started to pull out of my depressive state.
