I have a friend of 10 years who has depression and other conditions. He’s usually warm and funny, but sometimes, from the first word on the phone, I can tell he’s in a rough spot, like, “Oh, he’s really down right now.”
When that happens, I don’t try to cheer him up or stay quiet. Instead, I say, “I’m feeling off too.” It’s not a lie. When he’s struggling, somehow I’m often in sync with him.
In those moments, we both just let ourselves sink. We talk about dark stuff, like what if the world ended, or how many years we’ve got left. It’s not like we mean it, but we spend the night diving deep into these heavy topics.
Gradually, it starts to feel kind of funny between us. Like, he’ll say, “That’s impossible, you said the same thing last year!” or I’ll get called out for something similar.
It doesn’t exactly lift the dark mood, but he’ll say “thanks,” and it feels like I’m there for him in some way.
Of course, I worry a lot, so when he’s like that, I keep an eye on him for a while.
I hope when we’re both old, we can still be like this, just talking it out.
