In my third year as a working adult, I fell into a depressive state. The cause was stress from my boss. I was living alone in Osaka at the time. The company’s headquarters was in Tokyo, and most new hires worked there, but I was the only woman assigned to Osaka. In a city where I had no ties, friends, or colleagues my age, I started my career.
The job was grueling—working from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. some days. My boss was usually calm, but when something set him off, he’d turn intense, calling and yelling at me late at night or early in the morning. My mind never got a break.
One day, I started having stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, and sudden hearing loss in one ear. I hit my limit. At the hospital, they recommended I see a psychiatrist.
At first, I was overwhelmed with self-blame and couldn’t find peace. But after about two months, I started to calm down. Slowly, I began to recover.
I decided not to return to that workplace and started job hunting. It took over six months to get there, but my mom’s understanding back home was a huge support.
