A Friend Suggested Meditation for My Depression

Anyone who’s had depression knows the drill: extreme fatigue and lack of motivation. Even with milder symptoms, I felt resistant to the meds prescribed and started looking for natural alternatives.

That’s when a friend suggested meditation.

Apparently, the method varies, but they said closing your eyes to clear your mind makes your body feel light and floaty, and that sensation is supposedly soothing.

That night, I turned off the room lights, lay on my back on the futon, and with eyes closed, vaguely focused on the spot between my eyebrows. I felt a spreading sensation in my head, like I was drifting off to sleep yet somehow fully aware—a strange state.

After a minute or two, with my eyes shut, I noticed flickers like shooting stars or swirling blue patterns—weird visuals.

It might sound over the top, but it felt like connecting to the universe.

Even though the imagery was dark and unsettling, my body felt light and oddly comfortable, and I drifted off to sleep without realizing.

The next day, something shifted. My waking up felt great—getting up, once a chore, felt easy for some reason.

I was surprised. Though not fully, I noticed a slight change: I started noticing flowers or the neighborhood kids with a fresh perspective, like my view of the world had shifted a bit.

I don’t fully get why it felt so good—lacking the knowledge to explain it. I once read about brain chemicals being released, but bottom line, it lightened both body and mind.

It still feels a bit surreal, so I only do it when I feel like it, but for anyone thinking of starting, it’s easy enough that I’d recommend giving it a try.
