My Sister’s Depression After Moving to Tokyo

My depression story is about my sister. She graduated high school, got a job, and moved to Tokyo.

We’re from a rural area, but she was kind to everyone and good-natured, so our family wasn’t too worried about her thriving in Tokyo.

But six months after her move, we got a call from the Tokyo police. They said she was found in a moment of deep distress in her dorm, saved by someone sharing her room.

My parents rushed to Tokyo. At the hospital, the doctor told them she had depression.

We’d heard of depression but didn’t know much about its symptoms.

She said going to work was painful. The doctor recommended rest, so she quit her job and returned home.

I’d only ever seen her full of energy, so her lifeless state shocked me.

Even back home, she faced moments of overwhelming despair a few times.

We don’t know what caused her depression, but as a family, we’re committed to fighting it for our beloved sister.
