My best friend went through depression. The reasons seemed tied to struggles with her family and not getting the care or attention most kids get growing up.
She often stayed in bed, so I’d visit her at home to check in. Sometimes, she’d suddenly cry about her live-in boyfriend or seem emotionally unstable.
To overcome it, she mainly went to a psychiatrist and took meds to stabilize her mood swings.
Alongside that, I’d stop by her place, say hi, and hang out. I avoided saying things like “keep going” or digging into her issues to not stress her out.
We’d spend one or two hours in the same room, watching TV or chatting about nothing big. Later, she’d email me saying it was a good distraction, so I don’t think I was a bother.
